Mission Policy

Vision Statement

That we be a church where missions is a priority both in our local community and globally. That we follow the great commission as stated in Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”.

Our Mission

To follow our vision, by bringing God to the people through the gospel. This is done by seeking opportunities within our community, and working globally in conjunction with mission agencies.

To stimulate the church to become a growing heartbeat for mission. To educate the church in the practice of mission.

Purpose of Our Mission Policy

To help us achieve a clear sense of direction.

To avoid making important decisions based on emotion or pressing circumstances without some guidelines.

To insure that we are good stewards of the Lord’s money.

To inform candidates of our guidelines and expectations in preparation for seeking support.

Revision of the Mission’s Policy

This policy will be reviewed annually by the Mission’s Committee and revised as the need arises. Revisions will be presented first to the Deacons’ Board and Pastoral Staff for approval and then to the congregation.


Short-term mission

Temporary in nature - 1 year or less in length.


Continual in nature, but has a definite finish date – 1 to 5 years in length


On-going in nature with a commitment of over 5 years.

Financial Policy

The budget is prepared by the Mission’s Committee, is then submitted to the Deacons’ Board and Finance Committee for review. It is then presented for approval to the congregation at the Annual Meeting.

Insurance, Education of Missionaries’ Children, Medical and Retirement Funds

It is presumed that these four items have been taken into consideration by the missionary agency in setting the missionaries’ support levels. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the missionary agency and the missionary to insure these essential provisions are subscribed to.

Financial Support

The Committee uses the latest financial support information provided by the missionaries or agencies in conjunction with past budgets as a guide to adjust the missionary budget. The above-mentioned support will take into account any regular substantial personal gifts a missionary might receive.

That the main focus of our budget should reflect supporting mission work involved with evangelism. With consideration of some of the budget being designated to infrastructure mission work.

It is our policy to support missionaries and ministries who serve under boards and agencies who have:

•Been accredited (must be a registered Canadian charity)

•A reputation for integrity and stability

•A doctrinal statement that is true to the Word of God and is in agreement with the Governing Document of Lighthouse Baptist Church

•Sound and open financial policies and practices

•Clearly defined and generally accepted principles and practices of operation

•Demonstrated good management and whose missionaries are given thoughtful direction

Termination of Support

Termination of Support may be the result of a change of assignment, location or sending agency as well as deviation from the Governing Document of Lighthouse Baptist Church, specific incompetence, moral problems or failure to fulfill the responsibility assigned to them. Support will be terminated on the effective date of the individual’s resignation. Termination of support of a missionary who is retiring will be handled on an individual basis, taking into consideration all relevant circumstances. Support may be terminated if the missionary no longer requires such or can assume other employment, which will eliminate their need of further financial assistance. When it is necessary to withdraw support of a missionary it shall be done prayerfully, by the Mission’s Committee in consultation with the Deacons’ Board, congregation, the mission agency and the missionary involved.


1.Will need to agree with the Governing Document of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

2.Will agree to contact Lighthouse Baptist Church, either by post, e-mail, or telephone a minimum of every 3 months or more frequently as needed (to promote a close working relationship between the missionary and the church).

3.A supported missionary is expected to visit Lighthouse Baptist Church at least once while on furlough.

4.Will submit to the Mission Committee an annual report of their ministry in order to keep records up to date. This report should be an evaluation of the previous year’s work, and goals for the following year, and, a financial statement breaking down their support.

5.Will agree for the Mission Committee to request an evaluation from the mission agency on their work being done on the field. This report will include accountability for family relationships, financial stewardship, ministry goals, program practices, and doctrinal consistency.

6.Will agree to a review every 3 years.

7.Will agree to a full disclosure when

-changing mission agencies (will need to reapply for support)

-leaving the mission agency

-retirement or semi-retirement

-change in nature of work within the mission agency

-if financial status changes

-if placed under discipline (mission agency should inform supporting churches)

-if change in marital status

8.Will be required to complete our Missionary Application Form.

Missions Operation

Missionary Conferences (for future consideration for Lighthouse Baptist Church)

It is the responsibility of the Mission’s Committee to plan, organize and implement one conference annually. The purpose of these conferences is to inform, challenge, and through Biblical teaching present the mandate of Missions to the congregation. Missionaries would be encouraged to attend the conference and participate whenever possible.

Evaluation of Supported Ministries

The agency under which a missionary serves will be evaluated initially when the candidate first seeks support and thereafter periodically. The basis of evaluation shall be the degree to which we can whole-heartedly support their goals, doctrines and practices.

Responsibility of the Mission Committee

All applications for support will be required to be brought in front of the Mission Committee for review first, before it is considered by the leadership of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

The mission committee will make a commitment to the supported missionary to provide prayer support, having regular contact with the missionary by phone, mail or e-mail, and providing pastoral care (ie: get together with the missionary when on furlough, assisting with needs when on furlough if possible).

The mission committee will also inform the supported missionary with any changes to the Mission Policy.
